Upstream or Going with the Flow?

Imagine gently floating down a stream.

Now imagine that same stream but point your “kayak” in the other direction and paddle upstream ~ against the current.

This past weekend I was lucky enough to kayak in some beautiful marsh areas and it caused me to think about a message that I often receive (and sometimes ignore): get out of the way ~ allow ~ let it flow.

We often think that taking the more difficult path is required of us ~ that it is somehow more noble. It is important to remember that there is another choice.

I will admit there are times when I have chosen the upstream path. There have also been times when I have been unexpectedly called to paddle like I was in the wild rapids. I don’t regret the choices or circumstances that have resulted in some wild and, at times, awkward paddling on my part.

There are times when paddling against the current can yield major results. But there are also times when going with the flow can allow us to travel greater distances.

Where have you been paddling upstream? Where can you invite some gentleness into your life? Is there anyplace where you can let it flow?

If you are experiencing any areas of resistance in your life right now, consider letting go, just for a little bit. Pick up your paddle. Consider where you are. Think about where you would like to be. And then plan your journey.

Be easy about it.

Let it flow.

Remember that selecting the path of least resistance is not a sign of weakness. Sometimes, it is a sign of wisdom and strength.

Slow down to speed up.

Allow some gentleness into your life.

Let your kayak float downstream just for a day.
